Washington Spirit

Washington DC women's professional team playing in the NWSL

The Washington Spirit is a professional women’s soccer team based in Washington D.C. Founded in November of 2012, the Spirit won their first NWSL Championship in 2021, led by star players like Trinity Rodman and Ashley Hatch. Known for their strong development of youth players and passionate fan base, the Spirit continue to be a competitive force in the league.

November 21, 2012

  • NWSL is announced and Bill Lynch founds a franchise team in Washington DC

April 13, 2013

  • The Spirit play their first game, drawing with the Boston Breakers

2019

  • Owner Bill Lynch sells majority shares to Steve Baldwin

Summer 2021

  • Allegations of abuse and a toxic work environment against head coach, Richie Burke,  and owner Steve Baldwin, came to light

October 14, 2021

  • Baldwin announces sale of the club 

March 30, 2022

  • Michele Kang buys the club

  • The Spirit reach the finals of the NWSL Championship, losing to Orlando Pride

December 2012

  • The name Washington Spirit is announced

2016

  • Season ends with the Spirit second in the NWSL standings. This is the best record since the team was founded

January 13, 2021

  • The Spirit make history by drafting 18 year old Trinity Rodman 

October 6, 2021

  • Players publish a letter denouncing Steve Baldwin and asking for the team to be sold to minority owner Michele Kang

November 20, 2021

  • The Spirit win their first NWSL Championship 2-1 against the Chicago Red Stars
